NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / September 12, 2017 / Shares of Tesla saw a pop on Monday after it was confirmed that the company played a part in helping some people in Florida evacuate from Hurricane Irma. The electric vehicle maker gave Tesla owners a temporary update that extended the battery life of certain models for drivers in Florida. Shares of Apple also saw a slight pop ahead of the big launch today.

Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) shares closed up 5.91% yesterday with almost 7.7 million shares traded. It was battery news that were a credit to shares jumping on Monday. The company confirmed the news that indicated the electric vehicle giant has temporarily extended the battery life of certain models for drivers in the state of Florida so that they can evacuate. It was discovered on Reddit when Tesla owners noticed that the "temporary update" was given to vehicles within the evacuation zones. The update pushed the battery of 60kWh models up to 75kWh. According to Elektrek, this update meant about 30 miles of more range on a full charge. The update is temporary and ordinarily the company charges at the minimum $5,000 for the permanent change.

Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) shares closed up 1.81% on Monday with nearly 32 million shares traded. Investors were eagerly on their toes yesterday waiting for Apple's big launch event today. The tech giant's CEO, Tim Cook, emphasized in an interview with Fortune that the company's products are not for the rich. He said that the company's installed base of more than a billion consumers shows it doesn't only cater to the rich. In the interview, Cook also discussed the company's endeavor with its Apple watch tracking health. He said, "There's a lot of stuff that I can't tell you about that we're working on, some of which it's clear there is a commercial business there. And some of it, it's clear there's not. And some of it it's not clear. I do think it's a big area for Apple's future."
