Missouri American Water Helps to Protect the Source During Drinking Water Week

Business Wire 6-May-2019 9:53 AM

Company releases annual Consumer Confidence Report with data about water quality

Missouri American Water is proud of its water quality, and the company will be using an awareness "holiday" to help its customers and the public to understand exactly why.

In recognition of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) Drinking Water Week 2019, Missouri American Water is implementing a communications campaign that seeks to recognize the vital role water plays in everyday lives. The company also wants its customers and the public to understand how to protect and preserve our world's most precious natural resource. Drinking Water Week will be observed nationwide from May 5–11 and will center once again on the theme Protect the Source.

As part of Drinking Water Week, Missouri American Water announced today that the company's 2018 Water Quality Reports are now accessible through the company website at https://amwater.com/moaw/water-quality/water-quality-reports, as well as via printed copies that can be mailed to customers.

"Though we have come a long way in terms of our water treatments and services, there is still a lot of work to be done and challenges to overcome," said Debbie Dewey, President of Missouri American Water. "The hardest being that water is often taken for granted. Every single day, a person turns on his or her tap to bathe; brush teeth; or get water for drinking, cooking and cleaning. And unless the person notices something unusual, water quality is never given another thought. That is where the Drinking Water Week campaign comes in."

Also known as the Consumer Confidence Report, Missouri American Water's annual water quality report compares the quality of water supplied by Missouri American Water against standards established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The report describes local drinking water source information and shares test results, including all substances detected in the water and their levels.

By providing two easy ways for customers to receive confirmation that their drinking water meets all federal standards for water quality, the company is also working to increase the public's understanding of the value of water.

In addition, Missouri American Water will be out in the community celebrating Drinking Water Week, with the goal of generating awareness about the need to maintain quality and conserve the supply of the world's drinking water. Events and activities include:

  • A tour of our largest water treatment plant, Central Plant, for a group of local 7th-grade students
  • An open house at our Radcliffe wastewater facility for members of that neighborhood

Missouri American Water will also be taking the opportunity to educate its customers and communities throughout the week about the specific steps taken to ensure the delivery of clean water from various sources. These include:

  • Nearly 1 million tests and measurements that are conducted each year at American Water's state-of-the-art research laboratories around the country;
  • The innovation of the most advanced technology, equipment and filtration processes (to date, American Water has examined more than 600 technologies and is actively pursuing a dozen partnerships to create better efficiencies); and
  • Vigorous work with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to meet/exceed water quality standards and to address emerging water contaminants so that potential quality threats are stopped in their tracks.

And as a result of the above, Missouri American Water surface treatment plants are members of the Partnership for Safe Water. The Partnership is a national voluntary initiative developed by the EPA and other water organizations to recognize water suppliers that consistently achieve water treatment standards that surpass EPA requirements. Fewer than one percent of water utilities in the U.S. have achieved this recognition. All six of the company's surface treatment plants – including all four in St. Louis County, a fifth in Joplin and a sixth in Jefferson City – have received 15-year Director's Awards from the Partnership.

To advance goals to Protect the Source, Missouri American Water encourages individuals to take the following action during Drinking Water Week, then work to put that action into year-round practice.

  1. Be conscious of daily water use and take the necessary steps in the home to be water smart and help preserve this precious resource, which can also have an impact on reducing monthly bills.
  2. Be sure that leaking pipes and faucets—indoors and outdoors—are repaired.
  3. Take care in the use of garden, lawn, garage and other home products, and ensure that they do not inadvertently find their way into water sources.
  4. Dispose of chemicals, unused medicines or other potentially harmful products properly, and do not put them directly into home drains, the sewer, street drains or the lawn.
