Each year, the ENERGY STAR Residential New Construction program presents Market Leader Awards to outstanding partners that have made important contributions to energy-efficient construction and environmental protection by building a significant number of ENERGY STAR certified homes. EPA proudly recognizes KB Home's efforts as an ENERGY STAR partner.

KB Home built its first ENERGY STAR certified new home in 2000. The 131,000+ ENERGY STAR certified homes KB Home has built since that time have collectively saved homeowners an estimated $735 million in utility bills. The energy-efficient features of these homes are also estimated to have prevented greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to that emitted by 433,000 passenger vehicles.

"In 2008, we made an industry-first commitment to build 100% of our homes to ENERGY STAR certification standards, and we remain one of only three national builders to do so," said Jeffrey Mezger, chairman, president and chief executive officer of KB Home. "We are the clear industry leader, building more ENERGY STAR certified new homes in recent years than any other homebuilder."

While consumers may assume that energy efficiency is a given when buying a new home, EPA estimates that only 10% of new homes in the U.S. in 2016 and 2017 met ENERGY STAR certification standards. To earn the ENERGY STAR certification label, a home must meet rigorous requirements for energy efficiency set by EPA and undergo third-party testing and verification. The KB homes built to ENERGY STAR certification standards are, on average, up to 75% more efficient than typical existing homes today, and offer significant potential utility savings to KB homeowners.

"The success of the ENERGY STAR program is grounded in the great work of our partners, and our Market Leader Award winners demonstrate a high level of commitment to making ENERGY STAR certified homes and apartments available to American consumers," said Jonathan Passe, Chief of the ENERGY STAR Residential Branch at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

In recognition of its longstanding partnership with ENERGY STAR and sustainability leadership in the home building industry, KB Home has also been given EPA's highest major national awards, including the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award in 2019, the ninth year in a row that KB Home has received this prestigious honor.
