China on Thursday said American film imports will be affected due to the additional reciprocal tariff against the Asian country by U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a public statement on the China Film Administration's website, the country's film regulator said, "The wrong move by the U.S. government to abuse tariffs on China will inevitably further reduce the domestic audience's favorability towards American films."
"We will follow market rules, respect the audience's choice, and moderately reduce the number of American films imported. China is the world's second-largest film market. We have always adhered to a high level of opening up to the outside world and will introduce more excellent films from the world to meet market demand," the spokesperson added when asked about the recent move by Trump and its impact on American film imports.
Trump on Wednesday said he was issuing a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs for more than 75 countries that had reached out for negotiations but slapped China with an even higher rate.
He wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, that "Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately."
