To tariff or not to tariff: Trump to provide update on chips tariffs on Monday

President Donald Trump said on Saturday he will provide an update on the administration's proposed semiconductor tariffs on Monday.

"I'll give you that answer on Monday," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

Yesterday, the Trump administration excluded smartphones, computers and other popular consumer electronics from reciprocal tariffs. The exclusions include computer semiconductors and equipment used to manufacture semiconductors.

Trump has previously suggested sectoral tariffs for semiconductors, similar to the ones applied on steel and aluminum. "The chips are starting very soon," the President said earlier in the month.

In February, Trump suggested tariffs in the "in the neighborhood of 25%" on autos and similar duties on semiconductors and pharmaceutical imports.
