Fund will provide financial assistance after devastation caused by Hurricane Irma
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Adtalem Global Education (NYSE: ATGE), a leading global education provider, announced today the creation of the AUC Assistance Fund. The fund, a 501(c)(3) foundation, was created in response to people and organizations affiliated with Adtalem and Sint Maarten-based American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC), who have extended offers to help following the devastation of Hurricane Irma. Funds will be distributed to students, faculty and employees directly impacted by the storm, including those who live on Sint Maarten but were not on-island during the hurricane.
Hundreds of AUC students, faculty and colleagues who endured Hurricane Irma on Sint Maarten suffered a tremendous personal impact from the natural disaster, said Lisa Wardell, president and CEO of Adtalem. Many need to rebuild their lives entirely, having lost their homes, cars and all personal belongings. It is an honor for me to be the founder of this resource and to make a $25,000 personal donation.
According to the National Hurricane Center, last weeks event was the first time in recorded history that two Category 4 storms have been in the Atlantic simultaneously in the same week. When Hurricane Irma struck Sint Maarten and the AUC campus on Sept. 5, there were more than 500 students, faculty and staff on the island. Through the combined efforts of the U.S. military, and Adtalem chartered flights and boats, students and faculty are now safely off the island. In all, over 770 people and dozens of animals were evacuated.
In addition to the AUC Assistance Fund for students, faculty and employees, Adtalem and AUC will be supporting Sint Maarten directly in its efforts to rebuild the island and its resources. Adtalem will also make available its Caring Fund, an internal employee resource established to help lessen the financial burden of events like the hurricanes that struck Adtalem colleagues in Sint Maarten, Houston and Florida. The Caring Fund matches donations made by colleagues to support their peers.
Those wishing to donate to the AUC Assistance Fund can visit the Funds website at www.aucassistancefund.com or send donations via text message by texting 41444 and then typing in AUCASSIST.
