S&P 500 is showing signs of institutional selling: Sell Imbalance hits -$1.0 billion

Following the Big Money in S&P 500 Stocks

So far in trading today, the S&P 500 ETF is unchanged. SPY stock last traded at $681.21. Large volume bursts in S&P 500 stocks reached 59.1 million shares worth a total of $12.5 billion in transactions. There was notable buy pressure in the Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples sectors. Overall, sell volume pressure surpassed buy volume pressure by a 1.2 to 1 ratio. There were 139 stocks that had more buy pressure on balance, and 150 stocks that had more sell pressure from large institutions. As a whole, there was a net negative -$1.0 billion in dollar volume trades. A greater amount of the trading volume occurred on lit exchanges, at 62.7%, compared with 37.3% being transacted in the dark pool. As you can see from the chart below, the most recent cumulative sell imbalance is -$1.0 billion, however, the furthest sell imbalance for the day occurred at 1:30 PM, when the net sell dollar volume was -$1.2 billion. The highest cumulative buy imbalance occurred at 11:15 AM, when the net buy hit +$124.4 million. The largest spike in imbalance came between 12:30 PM and 12:45 PM when the sell pressure surpassed the buy pressure by a 4.8 to 1 ratio.

Flow by Sector

Technology had the highest amount of dollar volume bursts of all the SPDR sectors, with sell dollar volume exceeding buy dollar volume by $694.4 million. 19 of the Technology stocks had positive dollar balance, versus 32 that were net negative.

Individual Stocks

AMZN stock had the single biggest volume burst activity of all the S&P 500 stocks. Buy volume bursts surpassed sell volume by 1.1 million shares. As of this afternoon, the average purchase price on buy volume was $248.31. The stock has rallied $23.74, indicating strength following the trade.
