S&P 500 is showing signs of institutional buying: Buy Imbalance hits +$73.2 million

Following the Big Money in S&P 500 Stocks

So far in trading today, the S&P 500 ETF is up 1.3%. SPY stock last traded at $545.26. Large volume bursts in S&P 500 stocks reached 43.0 million shares worth a total of $5.4 billion in transactions. There was notable buy pressure in the Communication Services and Industrials sectors. Overall, buy volume pressure and sell volume pressure were fairly similar during trading. There were 153 stocks that had more buy pressure on balance, and 110 stocks that had more sell pressure from large institutions. As a whole, there was a net positive +$73.2 million in dollar volume trades. A larger portion of the trading volume matched up in the dark pool, with 51.3% of the large volume transactions being made off-exchange, while only 48.7% was traded on lit exchanges. Daily Chart: Large Volume Bursts Over Time

As you can see from the chart below, the most recent cumulative buy imbalance of +$73.2 million occurred at 2:15 PM. This also represented the peak buy imbalance for the day. The lowest cumulative sell imbalance occurred at 11:00 AM, when the net sell reached -$356.7 million. The largest spike in imbalance came between 9:30 AM and 9:45 AM when the sell pressure surpassed the buy pressure by a 2.6 to 1 ratio.

Flow by Sector

Technology experienced the highest amount of dollar volume bursts of all the SPDR sectors, with buy dollar volume exceeding sell dollar volume by $63.5 million. 23 of the Technology stocks had positive dollar balance, versus 23 that were net negative.

Individual Stocks

NVDA stock had the single biggest volume burst activity of all the S&P 500 stocks. Sell volume bursts outpaced buy volume by 1.1 million shares. As of this afternoon, the average trade price on sell volume was $113.60. Even though the sell pressure has been significant, the stock price has risen $1.25 on the day.
