What is this indicator?

The Financial Account Balance measures the net flow of financial assets between the US and the rest of the world, including foreign investment in US assets and US investment in foreign assets.


Why is it important?

This data is important because it provides insight into the strength of the US economy relative to other countries and the level of foreign investment in the US. A positive financial account balance indicates that there is more foreign investment in the US than US investment in foreign countries, which can be seen as a vote of confidence in the US economy. Conversely, a negative balance can indicate that more US assets are being invested abroad than foreign assets invested in the US, which can signal a lack of confidence in the US economy. The Financial Account Balance can also impact exchange rates and interest rates. When foreign investors are investing more in the US, it can lead to an increase in demand for US dollars, which can strengthen the currency. Additionally, if foreign investors are investing more in US assets, it can lead to lower interest rates as the supply of available funds increases.
